The UK Associate Parliamentary Group on Sudan is conducting Parliamentary Hearings into the role of the international community in supporting Sudan's Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
The Hearings will provide an opportunity to examine the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement leading up 2011 and its implications for beyond, specifically how well the peace process has been supported and continues to be supported by the international community, including governmental bodies, donors, agencies and organisations (in particular those based in Britain). As we approach the final phases of the CPA, the Hearings will also raise awareness in UK Parliament of the gaps that remain to be filled, and thereby improve policies and highlight the challenges still to be faced by Sudan in the next few years.
At the end of 2009 the Sudan APG invited short written submissions from interested organisations and individuals with relevant experience and expertise - especially those who have experience from within Sudan. The group was particularly interested in receiving submissions, including case studies, which address any of the following issues:
- International engagement and commitment, including fulfilment of pledges
- International role in implementation of the CPA
- Preparations for elections, the referendum and in particular post-2011
- International engagement with other regional issues, for example in Darfur, the East and the Three Areas
- Distribution of aid, including efficacy of contributions and funds
- Advocacy and political awareness of critical events and deadlines
Following the submission of written evidence, the Committee selected a small number of respondents to come into Parliament to present oral evidence. The oral hearings have been takinig place throughout January 2010.
The written and oral evidence will be compiled to produce a report with concrete, practical recommendations for the international community.
