Acting Chair, Lord Alton of Liverpool
David was a member of the House of Commons for 18 years and today is an independent Cross Bench Life Peer. David has raised awareness in the House of Lords of the trade in human slavery in Sudan. David visited Darfur in October 2004 and subsequently produced a report Darfur: The Genocide Continues.
Chair, Glenys Kinnock, Baroness of Holyhead
Glenys served as a Labour Party Member of the European Parliament from 1994 – 2009 and was awarded a life peerage in 2009. She is currently the Shadow Minister for the Department of International Development in the House of Lords. Glenys was Minister for Africa and the UN from 2009-10 and, as founder and Director of the NGO One World Action, has a particular interest in development, human rights and gender issues in Sudan.
Vice-Chair, Hilary Benn
Hilary is currently the Labour MP for Leeds Central. He has a longstanding interest in development in Sudan, having served as the Parliamentary under Secretary of State for International development from 2001-2002 and subsequently served in the Cabinet as secretary of State for International Development from 2003-2007.
Vice-Chair, Lord David Chidgey of Hamble-le-Rice
David was formerly the Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs in the House of Commons from 1999-2005, and a member of the Joint Committee on Human Rights from 2003-2005. He is a member of European Parliamentarians for Africa and Chairman of the oversight committee for the Commonwealth Policy Studies Unit.
Vice-Chair, Tony Baldry MP
Tony was Chair of the Select Committee for international Development from 2001 – 2005 - in which time the Select Committee published numerous reports on development and humanitarian policy in Africa - and now chairs the Conservative Party’s Commission on Human Rights. He is a member of the Council of the Overseas Development Institute and a Trustee of Friends of Africa.
Secretary, Baroness Jenny Tonge of Kew
Jenny is the former Liberal Democrat MP for Richmond Park and Liberal Democrat Shadow International Development Spokesperson. She has been a passionate advocate for Sudan during her time in Parliament. Jenny is now based in the House of Lords and continues to be vocal on the need to promote woman's rights, health, education and development in Sudan.
Treasurer, John Montagu, Earl of Sandwich
John has worked for Christian Aid and Save the Children and has been involved with a number of international charitable organisations. He is the author of Prospects for Africa. John has visited Sudan on numerous occassions, most recently in February 2011, and continues to raise awareness about conflict, peace and development in Sudan in the House of Lords.
